Introduction to Acetylene Jewelry Soldering

Class Description:

Learn the basics of soldering soft metals such as copper, bronze, silver or gold with an acetylene jewelers’ torch. We will also be covering some basic metal cutting, texturing and shaping, so that students can create soldered circles of copper wire, to be formed into bracelets or rings.
This class is a prerequisite for any member who wishes to use the acetylene torch in the Jewelry Zone at IFL.

Skills Covered:

•Use of a jewlers’ saw and files to create clean joins for soldering.
•Basic guidelines for safety and use of acetylene torch.
•Application and use of flux.
•Melting properties of soft metals and various appropriate solders.
•Filing and cleaning of finished joins.
•Hammering, shaping, texturing circles into a bangle/bracelet or ring.
Students should be able to complete 3 soldered bracelets.

Prerequisites:

Must have already taken basic jewelry room safety class at IFl.

Materials Provided:

Saw blades
Flux
Silver solder
Copper wire
Acetylene gas
Materials fees are not included in registration, please bring $10 cash to class.

Please have hair tied back, close toed shoes, and avoid loose fitting, draping clothing.

Instructor Bio:

Alicia is the manager of the Jewelry Leather and Textiles Zone at Ifl, where she can be regularly found creating handmade jewelry, leather handbags, and clothing for her local business, BelovedLeather.
