Join current IFL Incubator Artist, David Cedeño aka Chocolate David, for two evenings of demonstration and hands-on creation and application of custom stencils. The First week will cover stencils and what you can use them for. Some examples will be shown, (ie. Banksy – Martha Stewart). We will discuss the recommended tools to use as well as some basic techniques for creating  stencils, including Xacto knife and Xerox copies, and laser cutting. We will create a basic stencil on Photoshop/Illustrator. Students will be encouraged to create their own stencil as preparation for the second the class in which we we will discuss and implement the application of stencils with hands on demonstrations of safety gear, spraying and masking techniques, and creating multi-layer stencils. Students who bring a finished stencil will be shown how to use them properly with the guidance of the instructor.

Skills Covered:

•Basic understanding of how to create stencils from photographs and Xerox copies

•Laser Cutting Stencils

•Techniques for Spraying, Masking, and Layering Stencils

•Use of Safety Gear

What to Bring:

•Students to purchase Acetate or Stenciling Board (option of bringing their own or paying $5 for 2 12×12 sheets of acetate)

•Xacto Knife

•Cutting Surface ( Self‑Healing Cutting Mat if you have one, otherwise MDF will be provided for you)

Spray paint and MDF will be provided.

Instructor Bio:

Current Incubator Artist at Idea Fabrication Labs, Buffalo native with Costa Rican roots, David Cedeño made his way to SF in 2004 to work on his MFA in Art Direction, teach urban art to revolutionary middle school kids, and run the City streets seeking inspiration and writing life on walls. From NY to SF, then down to LA, he’s made a career out of his adolescent art boy dreams to bring a comic and street-art inspired, urban-industrial wonderland wrought with angst, humor, desire and political consciousness to the forefront of his work.
David has extensive experience with stenciling and has currently embarked on a study of intricate laser cut stenciling techniques.
